Prepaid billing and the ledger

TebibHost is prepaid: you top up a wallet, and usage is taken from it as it happens. There is no invoice at the end of the month and no card on file to surprise you.

Each resource is metered by the minute and charged by the hour:

Meter Unit Charged while
VM, per instance type (for example vm.b1.micro.running) hour the VM is running
Volume (volume.gb) GB-hour the volume exists, attached or not, including boot volumes
Snapshot (snapshot.gb) GB-hour the snapshot exists
Public IPv4 (ip.allocated) hour the address is allocated to your project
DNS zone (dns.zone) hour our nameservers serve the zone (not while it waits for verification); queries are free
Internet egress (egress.gb) GB traffic leaves to the internet, above the allowance

Not charged: stopped VMs (their disks and IPs still are), IPv6, VPCs, subnets, security groups, NAT gateways, private DNS, traffic inside a VPC or between your VPCs, and traffic to TebibHost itself.

Prices are per unit-hour; “per month” on the price list means 730 hours. See tebibhost.com/pricing or tebib price list. A price change applies from its start date; past hours keep the price they were charged at.

Each VM type includes some internet egress per month. A project’s allowance is the sum of its VMs’ allowances, pooled across the project for the calendar month; only egress above that is charged. Egress counts the bytes on the wire, including packet headers.

Prices and the ledger are in US dollars, kept to the millionth of a dollar. You pay in your own currency: a top-up is converted at that day’s published rate (the Central Bank of Kenya’s for KES), shown before you pay. If no fresh rate is available, top-ups in that currency pause rather than use an old one.

Credit from a promotion is used before your wallet, earliest-expiring first. Credit that isn’t used by its expiry date lapses. Your balance and runway include it.

Every movement of money is a transaction in a double-entry ledger: each top-up, each project’s hourly charge, each promotional grant, refund or correction. Transactions are never edited or deleted; a correction is a new transaction. That is what makes a few guarantees possible:

  • A payment credits once. A top-up is credited exactly once, however many times the payment provider notifies TebibHost.
  • Nothing is lost. A payment that can’t be matched to your organization or top-up (a wrong account number, a second payment) is held for staff to credit or refund, never dropped.
  • Statements add up. Each month’s closing balance is the next month’s opening balance, and every transaction is on exactly one statement.

See Billing and statements for your balance, transactions, statements and receipts, and what happens when the money runs out.

Refunds of unused wallet balance are handled by TebibHost staff on request during the preview.
